Erykah Badu stays unpredictable on tour

Thursday night Erykah Badu will grace the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach with her spiritual presence – minus her trademark headwrap. The artist instead will sport a large afro-wig with '70s flare, according to Universal/MoTown Records Director of Publicity Shirronda Sweet.
This will be Ms. Badu's second performance at the area's House of Blues. She played once during the venue's first year.
"We anticipate an excellent crowd for Erykah Badu," said Melissa McGrath, marketing and publicity manager for the venue. "She is an extraordinary talent and we are fortunate to have her on the schedule."
The artist, who has been compared vocally to Billie Holiday, began touring at the end of January and will continue through February. Her last scheduled date for this tour is Feb. 22 in her home state of Texas.
Ms. Badu is finishing work on her upcoming studio release, tentatively titled Worldwide Underground. The album was scheduled for a March release but may not debut until April, Ms. Sweet said.
Fans can expect the unexpected from Ms. Badu on Thursday night. She will perform a mix of both old and new material.
"There's not another Erykah out there," Ms. Sweet said. "Just when you think you know what she is going to sing, she hits you with something else. She's such an exciting artist."
Every show on the tour has been different, Ms. Sweet said. At one show Ms. Badu fielded questions from the audience; at another she talked about the possibility war; and at another she talked about the importance of following your dreams.
"Night after night it's something different," Ms. Sweet said. "She's called it the 'Frustrated Artist's Tour' and the 'Underground Tour.' It's definitely a tour for those in the underground scene."
The two-time Grammy award-winner (Best R&B Album, Female R&B Vocal Performance for On & On) has been nominated again this year. She could take home three awards for Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop) featuring Common from the Brown Sugar soundtrack.
Ms. Badu's nominations for the 45th annual Grammy Awards include Best Urban/Alternative Performance, Best R&B Song and Best Song Written For a Motion Picture, TV or Other Visual Media.
